Hyperthyroidism
Over Active Thyroid
What is
hyperthyroidism?
An overactive
thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, causes thyroid hormone levels to be higher than normal. This leads to an unhealthy
stimulation of the body’s metabolic rate. The main cause of
hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease and common symptoms include nervousness, hyperactivity, irritability, and
even hypertension. If left untreated, it can lead to serious conditions which can eventually be
fatal. Graves’ disease is caused by the body’s immune system over-stimulating the thyroid gland
and causing it to overproduce T3 and T4.

*Perception of elevated temperature
*Fatigue
How is hyperthyroidism diagnosed and
treated?
Diagnosis of
hyperthyroidism begins with a full examination and can be easily spotted if the thyroid is
enlarged. Following this, a blood sample is analyzed to determine the
T3 and T4 levels. If the test confirms hyperthyroidism, there are
multiple treatments available. Anti-thyroid drugs are available which
reduce thyroid activity. If diagnosed early, anti-thyroid drugs can
sometimes effectively cure hyperthyroidism. Another treatment method
involves the ingestion of radioactive iodine. Administration causes a
reduction in thyroid activity. If need be, a partial thyroid removal
procedure, or thyroidectomy, can be performed and with general follow-up treatment, the condition can be
cured. The following page provides more
details on hyperthyroidism treatment.
