Hypothyroidism
Underactive Thyroid
What is
hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid, is also caused by abnormal
immune system activity. The most common cause, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, is caused by the immune system attacking
the thyroid. This causes thyroid activity to be suppressed, which greatly hinders metabolic
activity. Symptoms of the disease include weight gain, fatigue, and slowed thought
processes. If the hypothyroidism is severe, a common cold or injury can trigger a myxedema coma
which is accompanied by hypothermia.

*Fatigue
*Perception of reduced temperature
How is hypothyroidism diagnosed and
treated?
Diagnosis of
hypothyroidism involves a simple blood test to measure the levels of T3 and T4 in the
body. If a patient shows a combination of the above-stated symptoms, a blood test is
ordered and a positive result is concluded with a treatment plan. The most common
treatment for hypothyroidism is the administration of oral hormone supplements. Initial dosing is
fairly high and determined based on the current hormone levels in the patient. Once the disease is
better controlled, the dose can be lowered to a regulatory level. Unfortunately, this
does not cure the disorder and the patient will most likely take the supplement through the entire course of
their life.
